Zanzibar is located off the coast of East-Central Africa, surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean. This archipelago is a true paradise for diving enthusiasts, boasting incredible marine biodiversity and breathtaking underwater landscapes.
With over 500 marine species, Zanzibar’s coral reefs are among the most abundant in the world, offering something for everyone, from snorkelers to macro diving lovers.
Zanzibar has over 30 dive sites, including reefs, walls, and wrecks. It is much more than just a beach destination for relaxation—it is an underwater adventure haven. Below, we detail the best dive sites in Zanzibar:
Dive Sites in Zanzibar, Africa
-
Nankivell & Hunga Reef
These dive sites are filled with large and colorful corals. Visibility is usually excellent, allowing you to spot schools of yellow snappers, leaf fish, crocodile fish, groupers, and many other reef species.
You may also see rays in the surrounding areas. With a maximum depth of 18 meters, this site is accessible for divers of all levels.
-
Big Wall, Mnemba Island
For advanced divers, Big Wall at Mnemba Island is a must. This deep wall site is perfect for those who love exploring natural caves and overhangs.
As you descend, you will observe large coral and sponge formations teeming with reef fish, as well as schools of pelagic species such as mahi-mahi, rainbow runners, and barracudas. With vertical drop-offs up to 70 meters and strong currents, Big Wall offers an exciting adventure.
-
Mwana Wa Mwana, Tumbatu Island
Tumbatu Island is home to some of Zanzibar’s most beautiful coral gardens, and Mwana Wa Mwana is a perfect example. Here, you can swim with octopuses, scorpionfish, rays, and seahorses.
The site requires boat access and descends to 18 meters. Currents can be strong, so an advanced diving level is recommended. Visibility is usually excellent, making it easy to spot turtles and other marine wonders.
-
Nungwi Reef, Mnemba Island
Nungwi Reef is the perfect spot for a night dive. Accessible from the beach, this site comes alive after sunset. With some luck, night dives here reveal guitar sharks, Spanish dancers, and cuttlefish at their most active while hunting. With depths ranging from 10 to 20 meters, this site is suitable for divers of all levels.
-
Stone Town, Unguja Island
The waters off Stone Town’s port are excellent for wreck diving. The Great Northern shipwreck has rested on the ocean floor for over 100 years, now hosting a thriving reef full of marine life. Located at 12 meters, this site is ideal for beginner divers interested in exploring a century-old shipwreck.
For advanced divers, the Royal Naval Lighter, a purposely sunk wreck at 30 meters, is another great option. Here, you can spot groupers, stonefish, eels, and occasionally reef sharks.
Best Time to Dive in Zanzibar
- You can dive in Zanzibar year-round.
The warm waters of the Indian Ocean maintain a constant temperature of around 27°C with visibility often exceeding 30 meters. During the months of September to December, you can spot turtles, dolphins, and whale sharks.
