There are places in the world where time seems to stand still underwater, and Sipadan is one of them. This small island in the Celebes Sea is considered one of the best diving destinations on the planet, offering unforgettable dives all year round. Although any time is a good time to dive into its waters, some seasons reveal its magic with special intensity.
Best Time to Dive in Sipadan
Sipadan enjoys a privileged position in the heart of the Coral Triangle, which means diving is possible all year round. There are no monsoons or typhoons to ruin the experience—only subtle changes that transform its underwater scenery.
From March to June
Between March and June is considered the best time to enjoy Sipadan at its peak: the sea is calm, the sun shines most of the day, and visibility can exceed 40 meters.
This is when experienced divers say “Sipadan shows itself in all its glory”: endless schools of barracudas, turtles resting on the corals, and reef sharks patrolling the currents.

From September to November
From September to November, conditions remain excellent. The water maintains visibility between 20 and 30 meters, and encounters with pelagic life are frequent, although with fewer travelers around. It’s an ideal time for those seeking to enjoy the essence of the place in a calmer atmosphere.
From December to February
On the other hand, from December to February is the rainy season, which may slightly reduce visibility and cool the water temperature. Even so, diving remains not only possible but spectacular. Showers usually occur in the late afternoon or evening, leaving mornings clear for diving.
It’s worth noting that once a year, Sipadan temporarily closes for a month to allow the natural environment to recover. Therefore, we always recommend checking with your operator before planning your trip.

Marine Life by Season
Sipadan is synonymous with biodiversity. At any time of the year, its vertical walls and reefs are teeming with life. However, each season offers unique nuances.
During spring and early summer, activity reaches its peak. It’s the best time to spot large schools of barracudas, jacks, snappers, and green turtles. White-tip reef sharks are more commonly seen, while gentle currents make for smooth and comfortable dives.
In the autumn months, the sea continues to offer magnificent dives, with clear waters and fewer divers. It’s common to encounter turtles, eagle rays, grey reef sharks, and an abundance of reef fish among hard and soft corals.
Even during the rainiest months, from December to February, the underwater world remains full of life. Nearby areas such as Mabul and Kapalai are ideal for macro lovers: seahorses, nudibranchs, pipefish, and tiny creatures that turn each dive into a hunt for underwater treasures.

Top Dive Sites
Sipadan boasts more than a dozen world-class dive sites, each with its own character and charm. From the legendary Barracuda Point, where schools swirl in hypnotic spirals, to Turtle Cavern or South Point, where pelagic life dominates the currents.
