What are Nudibranchs?

This time we are talking about Nudibranchs, these creatures that are as fantastic as they are fascinating. The variety of colors, designs, shapes, and textures is immense and impressive. They are also known as Sea Slugs and belong to the gastropod mollusk order, specifically within the subclass Opisthobranchia.

Recreational divers often seek coral reefs to enjoy the underwater scenery, but macro photographers tend to explore seemingly featureless seabeds. This is known as Muck Diving, a type of diving ideal for finding fascinating creatures hidden in the mud.

Sea Slug Diet

There are so many species that even among them, there is a wide range of diets. Some prefer a herbivorous diet, feeding on algae, for example. Others have predatory habits, consuming hydrozoans or solitary polyps.

Some even exhibit cannibalistic behavior, but most feed on the ocean’s most toxic substances (hydroids and sponges). The toxins they ingest go directly to their dorsal dermal extensions, called cerata. For this reason, they do not need a shell, as their color patterns signal their toxicity to potential predators.

Nudibranch Reproduction

Regarding their reproduction, we know that they are hermaphrodites: they can be both male and female, but they cannot fertilize themselves; they require another specimen of their species for reproduction. Their breeding season occurs during spring and summer.

Where to Find Sea Slugs

They can be found at practically all saltwater depths, but there is greater diversity in warm, shallow waters. For this reason, tropical seas are ideal for spotting a wide variety of species.

There are regions such as Anilao, in the Philippines, which are a paradise for finding these wonderful animals. Many species that are difficult to see in other parts of the world can be found here.

This is because it is located in an area known as the Coral Triangle, a marine region encompassing the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. This region has the highest marine biodiversity on the planet, and Anilao is a prime example. In fact, there are amazing routes where you can spend 10 days diving in shallow waters, providing the opportunity to see spectacular nudibranch species.
