Why dive in the Galápagos?

The Galápagos Islands, known worldwide as the “Enchanted Islands,” were declared a Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978. In addition to other recognitions, they have been considered by USA Today readers as the number one destination to see before you die.

“Galápagos is the second-largest marine reserve in the world.”

Located 1,000 kilometers off the coast of Ecuador, this archipelago consists of 13 large volcanic islands, 6 smaller islands, and 107 rocks and islets. The entire archipelago is filled with marine life and stunning underwater landscapes.

From small volcanic islands to open and deep waters, these waters are famous for their biodiversity and sightings of giant turtles, sharks, dolphins, and more. If you’re ready to discover everything Galápagos diving has to offer, here are some tips and recommendations to start your adventure.

Best season to visit Galápagos

Before answering this question, we clarify that this is a diving destination ideal for any time of the year, as there are no extreme weather conditions, marine life is always present, and temperatures remain stable. However, we differentiate between two diving seasons:

  • Warm season (January-May): The average temperature is 26°C, and the sea is calm. During these months, sightings of manta rays, eagle rays, among other species, are more frequent.

  • Cold season (July-November): The average temperature is 18°C, and marine currents are stronger. Consequently, due to the amount of nutrients they carry, many species and marine fauna gather. During these months, it is easier to spot whale sharks, humpback whales, and pilot whales.
