It’s the question we get asked most often before someone books a spot on a trip to Baja California Sur<\/a>: “Is my Open Water certification enough, or do I need something more?”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The short answer is that you can dive with an Open Water certification, and enjoy some incredible dives.<\/strong> The longer answer, the one that really matters, is that Baja California Sur isn’t a one-size-fits-all diving destination. Each of the three areas on our itinerary has a different diving profile, and understanding those differences will help you decide whether you’re ready to go as you are or whether it’s worth getting another certification before your trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s take it one step at a time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cabo Pulmo: Open Water is enough, and there’s a reason why<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cabo Pulmo National Park<\/a><\/strong> is probably the most accessible destination on the entire itinerary for an Open Water diver. Most of its dive sites range from 10 to 18 meters deep: El Vencedor at 16 meters, El Bajo with an average depth of 16 meters, and Las Casitas with a maximum depth of 16 meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That depth range is no coincidence. The depth limit for an Open Water certification is precisely 18 meters<\/strong>, and almost the entire park falls within that range. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In other words, you won’t be left at the surface watching everyone else descend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exceptions <\/strong>are sites such as El Cien (around 30 meters) or La Esperanza (around 20 meters), which do require an Advanced Open Water certification. But these aren’t the park’s main attractions. If you’re coming to see bull sharks or swirling schools of jacks, you can experience both with an Open Water certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One important detail: although the technical level is accessible, Cabo Pulmo<\/a> has currents at certain dive sites and times of the year. Los Morros, for example, offers drift diving in winter when the currents pick up. Your certification qualifies you to dive, but real experience is what allows you to enjoy the dive rather than simply manage it.<\/strong> With twenty or thirty dives under your belt, everything feels different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Paz: where Advanced Open Water starts to make a difference<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The dive sites accessible from La Paz are the most varied on the trip, and they’re also the ones that offer the greatest depth range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Los Islotes (the sea lion colony at Esp\u00edritu Santo Island<\/a>) offers dives between 5 and 15 meters. Perfect for Open Water divers, without question. Swanee Reef sits at around 10 meters. The Salvatierra wreck has a maximum depth of 18 meters: right at the limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there are two dive sites that go beyond that range:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. El Fang Ming<\/strong> rests on a sandy seabed at a maximum depth of 22 meters<\/strong>. Known as the “Chinese Wreck,” it’s one of the most interesting wrecks in the Sea of Cortez, with accessible interior sections and black coral surrounding it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. San Rafaelito<\/strong> has a depth profile ranging from 5 to 25 meters<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    In both cases, we’re beyond the Open Water depth limit. With an Advanced Open Water certification, you can descend to 30 meters<\/strong>, which covers the entire itinerary without depth restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That doesn’t mean Open Water divers can’t join the trip. It simply means that on those two specific dives, the dive profile is adapted: you’ll explore the shallower sections of the wreck or reef without exceeding your depth limit. It’s still a fantastic dive. Just not exactly the same dive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Magdalena Bay: there’s no scuba diving here, and that changes everything<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Here’s the detail that surprises most people planning their first trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In Magdalena Bay, we don’t use scuba equipment<\/strong>. The activity involves snorkeling and freediving<\/strong> from traditional pangas<\/em> in the open ocean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When you’re following sardine bait balls and striped marlin in the middle of a hunt, bubbles from a regulator scare the animals away and force you into a pace that simply can’t keep up with the action. With snorkeling and freediving, you can get in and out of the water in seconds, move wherever the action takes you, and stay at the surface when you need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
