They do not have queues of divers waiting to get in or millions of photos on Instagram. The Togian Islands, in the very heart of Sulawesi, are exactly that: a place where the reefs have experienced very little pressure for decades and marine life remains in all its splendour.

If you already know Indonesia’s best-known diving destinations, such as Raja Ampat or Komodo, and you are looking for something different, something more remote and less well known, the Togian Islands have every chance of surprising you.

What you will find underwater in the Togian Islands

The Togian Islands are a peaceful destination, but they also offer some truly outstanding moments. It is not a place of strong currents or constant adrenaline, but it brings together things that are difficult to find on a single trip.

Una Una is perhaps the most spectacular spot in the area. It is an active volcanic island whose reefs attract schools of trevallies and barracudas in such large numbers that it is difficult to decide where to look.

The Walea Strait, which separates the two groups of islands, is on another level. A deep channel with currents that attract pelagic marine life.

Then there is the rest of the archipelago: pure reef diving with an abundance of small marine life. Nudibranchs, pipefish, moray eels, sea cucumbers and soft corals in excellent condition. For macro photographers, this place is an endless testing ground.

And after all that: a Second World War wreck. The B-24, an American bomber resting on the seabed of the Gulf of Tomini. It is a historic and visually impressive dive. The aircraft is still largely intact, covered in coral and colonised by marine life as though it had always been part of the reef.

The journey does not begin in Togian: the complete itinerary from Bitung

One of the reasons this trip works so well is that the Togian Islands are not the only destination. Our Bitung to Luwuk itinerary is a nine-day journey through some of the most interesting dive sites in northern and central Sulawesi.

The trip begins with a check dive in the Lembeh Strait, one of the world’s best muck-diving destinations. If you enjoy macro photography and want to see unusual creatures, Lembeh is exactly the place. Stonefish, mimic octopuses, mantis shrimps, seahorses and ghost pipefish: small but spectacular marine life.

Next comes Bangka Island, with a full day of diving, including a night dive. Bangka’s reefs are in excellent condition, and the diversity of hard corals is spectacular.

Halfway through the route, there is one stop that deserves a special mention: diving with whale sharks near Gorontalo. It is not guaranteed, of course, but sightings are frequent in the area, and the opportunity to swim with the largest fish on the planet in open water is something you will never forget. If you would like to learn more about this type of encounter, our blog features an article about all the marine wildlife of Baja California Sur, another destination where whale sharks take centre stage.

In the afternoon, the boat heads to the Olele Marine Park, with dive sites such as Sentinels and Traffic Jam, before sailing towards the Togian Islands overnight.

Why a liveaboard is the best way to do it

The Togian Islands are far from everything. There is no land-based infrastructure that allows you to reach every dive site efficiently. Transfers between islands take up time that you could otherwise spend in the water.

A liveaboard solves this in the most logical way possible: it takes you to where the action is, leaves you there, and by the next day it is already somewhere else. No transfers, no early starts to catch small boats and no logistics to organise. You wake up, have breakfast and jump into the water.

If you want to understand exactly how this type of trip works and the real advantages it offers over diving from land, we have an article explaining why you should take a liveaboard cruise in full detail. Although it focuses on the Galápagos Islands, the same logic applies here.

The difference in Togian is that the feeling of being in a genuinely remote place is even stronger. There are no crowds. Very few boats operate in the area. When you enter the water at Una Una or in the Walea Strait, there is a good chance that yours will be the only group at the dive site.

A destination for divers who have already seen other places

We are not going to mislead you: the Togian Islands are not the right destination for someone who wants large marine life and constant adrenaline on every dive. If you are looking for manta rays passing directly overhead or reef sharks at every site, there are other places in Indonesia that will offer more of that. Palau, for example, or the archipelagos in the southeast.

The Togian Islands are for divers who enjoy the process. Divers who stop for five minutes to observe a nudibranch. Who enjoy spending time beside a vertical wall covered in well-preserved coral. Who appreciate the calm underwater and value a destination that is not yet on everyone’s list.

What diving level do you need?

The itinerary combines easy dive sites with others that are more demanding. Lembeh and the reefs of Bangka are accessible to divers with an intermediate level of experience. The Walea Strait and some areas of Tanjung Flesko require greater experience because of the currents.

In general, we recommend this trip for advanced divers with at least 30 dives and experience in currents. If you are unsure whether your level is suitable, contact us before booking and we will give you an honest answer.

When should you visit the Togian Islands?

The best time to dive in the Togian Islands is between April and November, when conditions are more stable, visibility is better and there is less chance of heavy rain.

Outside this period, the destination is still accessible, but surface conditions can make navigation between the islands more difficult.

Plan your diving trip to the Togian Islands with Te Moana

At Te Moana Expeditions, we have been organising international diving trips for small groups for more than ten years. This Bitung to Luwuk itinerary is one of our most comprehensive trips in Indonesia: nine days, multiple destinations across Sulawesi and a combination of muck diving, reef diving, pelagic encounters and wrecks that is difficult to find on a single trip.

If you would like more information or want to see the available dates, contact us and we will tell you everything you need to know.

Request more information

Some destinations do not appear in the most widely shared rankings.
