Just ocean, current, big life\u2026 and underwater moments that justify everything you have dived before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have ever <strong>dreamed of seeing a wall of hammerhead sharks<\/strong> (not one, not five, but dozens circling around you), Malpelo is your place. <strong>And this year, in December 2026, from Te Moana Expeditions, we are going to experience it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Malpelo is different from anything you have ever dived<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Malpelo Island<\/strong> is a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/es\/list\/\">UNESCO World Heritage Site <\/a>and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parquesnacionales.gov.co\/nuestros-parques\/sff-malpelo\/\">Biosphere Reserve<\/a><\/strong>. Access is not open to everyone:<strong> entry is regulated,<\/strong> permits are limited, and dives are always carried out aboard authorized liveaboards. That is exactly what makes its ecosystem so exceptional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/tiburon-martillo-malpelo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16091 no-lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/tiburon-martillo-malpelo.jpg 600w, https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/tiburon-martillo-malpelo-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Its cold, nutrient-rich waters<\/strong>, fed by the Pacific currents, support a food chain that culminates in something very few people have had the privilege of witnessing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This is not easy diving<\/strong>: the currents are strong, the depths are considerable, and the level of experience required is high. But the reward is worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The species you will encounter underwater<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Malpelo is not a place of colorful reefs or calm tropical fish. It is pelagic, wild, and every dive can bring something different. This is what you will see with your own eyes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"332\" src=\"https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/buceo-tiburones-malpelo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16093 no-lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/buceo-tiburones-malpelo.jpg 600w, https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/buceo-tiburones-malpelo-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The smalltooth sand tiger shark<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(Odontaspis ferox)<\/em>, locally known as \u201cThe Monster of Malpelo\u201d, is a<strong> rare and elusive species<\/strong> that lives in <strong>deep waters.<\/strong> Malpelo offers some of the most unique sightings in the world of this species in relatively accessible waters, making the island a place of pilgrimage for divers and scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hammerhead sharks<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The great star. <em>Sphyrna lewini<\/em> gather here in <strong>schools <\/strong>that<strong> can exceed one hundred individuals.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You see them passing in formation, slow and majestic, completely ignoring you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Silky sharks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Curious, close, omnipresent. <em>Carcharhinus falciformis <\/em>are the<strong> most sociable inhabitants of Malpelo<\/strong> and usually accompany you throughout the entire dive. If you are not a <strong>shark diver <\/strong>yet, they will turn you into one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Oceanic whitetip shark<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Carcharhinus longimanus<\/em> appears in these waters sporadically, but genuinely. One of those sightings that guides treasure and divers never forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Manta rays and mobula rays<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>At certain times of year and in specific locations<\/strong>, manta rays make an appearance in the areas most exposed to the current, feeding on plankton near the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"351\" src=\"https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manta-rayas-malpelo.jpg\" alt=\"manta rays malpelo\" class=\"wp-image-16095 no-lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manta-rayas-malpelo.jpg 600w, https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manta-rayas-malpelo-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The best dive sites in Malpelo<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>El Bajo del Monstruo<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The jewel. An<strong> underwater mountain<\/strong> that rises from the bottom at around<strong> 30 meters<\/strong>. This is where the schools of hammerheads gather. The current can be intense, but when the school appears, everything else stops mattering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>La Gruta<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A spectacular <strong>underwater cavern<\/strong>, with walls covered in life: lobsters, moray eels, crabs. Ideal for divers who also enjoy underwater photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>El Arrecife de la Nevera<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A shallower area<strong> where reef life is denser.<\/strong> A good spot to end a day of deep dives with something more relaxed and colorful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Los Farallones<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vertical walls <\/strong>that drop to considerable depths.
