Not only because of their dazzling beauty but, above all, because of their uniqueness. Diving in cenotes is an experience like no other. It is a place full of magic\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For many years, I was lucky to work as an instructor in Playa del Carmen, and above all, I had the enormous fortune of becoming a Cenote guide, allowing me to show these wonderful caverns to divers from all over the world.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is a cenote?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But now\u2026 What exactly are cenotes? What makes them so special? Cenotes were a <strong>sacred place for the Mayans<\/strong> (a gateway to the underworld where some of their gods resided) and are <strong>natural entrances to the vast underground river system of Mexico\u2019s Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All rivers in Yucat\u00e1n are underground, and cenotes are essentially parts of the river ceiling that collapsed over time, forming entrances to this <strong>huge system of underwater caves and caverns.<\/strong> This region of <strong>Mexico<\/strong> has the <strong>largest number of cenotes in the world<\/strong>, around <strong>7,000 cenotes<\/strong>, with many still waiting to be discovered.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But of course, when explained like this, the idea of diving there may not seem so exciting. One might wonder what\u2019s so interesting about diving in an underground river with little marine life, or what makes it one of the most unique dives in the world. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was a common question people asked me when I was an instructor there. And when I closed my eyes, just visualizing the magic of the place, I didn\u2019t know where to start explaining why they should dive there. But the first thing that came to mind, and the first thing I told them, was that <strong>it is a place straight out of a fantasy tale, a magical site, a setting from a Tolkien book.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/agencia-de-buceo-cenotes-mexico.jpg\" alt=\"dive agency cenotes mexico\" class=\"wp-image-2803 no-lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/agencia-de-buceo-cenotes-mexico.jpg 600w, https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/agencia-de-buceo-cenotes-mexico-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why dive in cenotes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s like flying underwater in completely crystal-clear water&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It\u2019s like flying underwater in completely crystal-clear water\u2014so clear that it feels like you are surrounded by air rather than water. <strong>Flying through tunnels and enormous underwater cathedrals while admiring the incredible and ancient formations<\/strong> that decorate their walls and ceilings (stalactites, stalagmites, and gigantic columns), all while beams of light from various entrances create halos of green and blue tones, penetrating the water and forming a magical ambiance. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But it\u2019s not just the mystical environment that makes this place special. Inside, you can also find<strong> million-year-old marine fossils<\/strong> (from when this area was still a massive reef) and in some of them, <strong>remains of Mayan civilization<\/strong> (offerings thrown inside). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Additionally, experiencing the unique visual effect caused by the <strong>halocline<\/strong> (similar to the effect of a thermocline but not exactly the same) is fascinating, it results from the mixing of saltwater and freshwater. You simply have to do it and let yourself be enchanted by its magic&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What do you need to dive in Cenotes?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This magical underground river system allows for both cave and cavern diving<strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">.<\/span> Bel<\/mark>ow are the basic requirements to dive in Cenotes in Mexico:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To dive in the <strong>cave section<\/strong>, you need a full cave diver certification (<strong>full cave diver<\/strong>). <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, what makes it accessible to all divers is that to <strong>dive in the cavern area<\/strong>, you only need a minimum <strong>Open Water certification<\/strong>, as long as you are under the supervision of an instructor\/full cave diver.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/mejores-cenotes-bucear-mexico.jpg\" alt=\"best cenotes diving mexico\" class=\"wp-image-2804 no-lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/mejores-cenotes-bucear-mexico.jpg 600w, https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/mejores-cenotes-bucear-mexico-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Best Cenotes for Diving in Mexico<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>El Zapote Cenote (Hell Bells)<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Chikin-Ha Cenote<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Dos Ojos Cenote<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Angelita Cenote<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The Pit Cenote<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Casa Cenote<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Calavera Cenote<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How cenotes are created<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To better understand how the cenotes of the Riviera Maya were formed, here is a brief overview of their <strong>geological history.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the different Ice Ages, when sea levels were much lower than they are today, the entire Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula\u2014which<strong> more than 65 million years ago<\/strong> was a vast structure of coral reefs and limestone\u2014was exposed to the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/como-es-bucear-en-un-cenote.webp\" alt=\"como es bucear en un cenote\" class=\"wp-image-16514 no-lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/como-es-bucear-en-un-cenote.webp 800w, https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/como-es-bucear-en-un-cenote-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/temoanaexpeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/como-es-bucear-en-un-cenote-768x512.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The enormous caves and caverns were formed as <strong>rainwater gradually seeped into the limestone, slowly dissolving this highly porous and easily eroded rock. <\/strong>At the same time, as the water mixed with different minerals in the ground, it created the extraordinary geological formations found inside the caves: stalactites, stalagmites, and columns (formed when the two join together).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Over time, sea levels rose to what they are today, <\/strong>flooding these tunnels with saltwater in their deepest sections and rainwater in their shallower ones. This is what created the vast underwater river system that now runs beneath the Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We hope you found this article helpful!
